RNase inhibitors are commonly used to inhibit and control RNase contaminants in enzymatic manipulations of RNA. Intact Genomics RNase Inhibitor is a 49.8 KDa recombinant protein of murine origin which specifically inhibits RNases A, B and C by binding noncovalently in a 1:1 ratio with high affinity. Moreover, it does not inhibit polymerase activity when used with Taq DNA Polymerase, Reverse Transcriptase. This Inhibitor from Murine is resistance to oxidation compared to the human/porcine inhibitors as it lacks the pair of cysteines found in the human/porcine versions. Catalyzes the stepwise removal of mononucleotides from 3'-hydroxyl termini of duplex DNA. A limited number of nucleotides are removed during each binding event, resulting in coordinated progressive deletions within the population of DNA molecules. The preferred substrates are blunt or recessed 3'-termini, although the enzyme also acts at nicks in duplex DNA to produce single-strand gaps. 3'-protruding termini are resistant to cleavage; the degree of resistance depends on the length of the extension,with extensions 4 bases or longer being essentially resistant to cleavage. Exonuclease III activity depends partially on helical structure and displays sequence dependence (C>A=T>G). Temperature, salt concentration and the ratio of enzyme to DNA greatly affect enzyme activity, requiring reaction conditions to be tailored to specific applications. Exonuclease III has also been reported to have RNase H, 3'-phosphatase and AP-endonuclease activities.

A Catalase test is useful for the identification of many different bacteria. Since Streptococci lack the enzyme to catalyze hydrogen peroxide, and all Staphylococci possess it, 3% Catalase is used to separate the species. Also, Listeria monocytogenes, which is catalase positive can be differentiated from beta-hemolytic Streptococci. Most Neisseria species are catalase positive. 15% Catalase is used for anaerobes, with most anaerobes being catalase negative with the exceptions of several species in the B. fragilis group and a few of the anaerobic cocci. 30% Catalase is used with acid fast bacilli.
